Over/Under Totals Betting Guide

A totals bet (over/under) is a wager on the combined final score of both teams in a game. The sportsbook posts a number; say 47.5; and bettors choose whether the actual combined score will go over (48 or more) or under (47 or fewer). Totals are the third most popular bet type in NC after moneylines and spreads, and one of the most popular in low-scoring sports like NHL hockey.

How Over/Under Totals Work

NC sportsbooks set total lines based on team scoring averages, defensive metrics, weather, pace, and historical matchups. Most totals are posted with -110 vig on both over and under. Half-point totals (47.5) eliminate pushes; whole-number totals (47) can push if the score lands exactly. The sportsbook may move the total line as money comes in.

Over/Under Totals FAQ

What happens to overtime in totals?

In NFL and NBA games, overtime points count toward the total. In NHL, overtime and shootout goals count toward the total at all NC sportsbooks.

Why do totals move?

Sportsbooks adjust totals based on betting volume and breaking news (injuries, weather, lineup changes). If 80% of money is on the over, the total will rise.

Can I parlay totals with spreads?

Yes. All 7 NC sportsbooks support multi-leg parlays combining totals with spreads, moneylines, and props.
