Moneyline Betting Explained

A moneyline bet is the simplest wager in sports betting: you pick which team or player will win the game, with no point spread. North Carolina sportsbooks display moneylines in American odds format; a minus number for favorites (the amount you must wager to win $100) and a plus number for underdogs (the amount you win on a $100 wager).

How Moneylines Work

Moneyline odds reflect the implied probability that a team will win. A team listed at -200 must win for you to profit; you wager $200 to win $100. A team listed at +180 returns $180 in profit on a $100 stake if they win. The favorite's minus number and the underdog's plus number are not symmetrical; the difference is the sportsbook's built-in margin (the "vig" or "juice").

Moneylines in North Carolina

Moneyline betting is legal in North Carolina at all 7 licensed sportsbooks for both professional and college sports; including all in-state college teams (Duke, UNC, NC State, Wake Forest, ECU). NC law does not restrict moneyline wagering on collegiate sports; only individual college player props are prohibited.

Pros

  • Easiest bet type to understand for beginners
  • No need to predict margin of victory
  • Available on every sport at every NC sportsbook
  • Underdog moneyline payouts can be substantial

Cons

  • Heavy favorites pay very little (e.g., -400 means $400 risked to win $100)
  • Less profitable than spread betting on close games
  • Vig increases on uneven matchups

Best For

Beginners, underdog hunters, and bettors who want a clear win/lose outcome.

Strategy Tips

  • Compare moneyline odds across multiple NC sportsbooks; small differences add up
  • Avoid -300 or worse favorites unless you have a strong information edge
  • Underdog moneyline bets in low-scoring sports (NHL, soccer) have better expected value than favorites
  • Use a moneyline parlay calculator before placing parlay wagers

Moneylines FAQ

What does +150 mean on a moneyline?

A +150 underdog means a $100 wager returns $150 in profit (plus your $100 stake) if that team wins. Smaller stakes scale proportionally; a $20 bet would return $30 in profit.

Are moneyline parlays legal in NC?

Yes. All 7 NC sportsbooks offer moneyline parlays combining 2 or more teams. Each team must win for the parlay to settle as a winner.

Can I bet moneylines on UNC and Duke games?

Yes. NC law permits all standard wager types (moneyline, spread, total) on in-state college teams. Only individual player props on college athletes are prohibited.
