Daily fantasy sports (DFS) has been legal in North Carolina since 2019. NC residents 18+ can play DFS contests at all major operators; including DraftKings, FanDuel, Underdog, PrizePicks, and Sleeper. DFS is regulated separately from traditional sports betting and operates under different rules.

Types of DFS Contests in NC

Traditional DFS (Salary-Cap)

Drafting a roster of players within a salary cap, competing against other users in a tournament. Prizes are awarded based on cumulative player statistics. Available at DraftKings, FanDuel, and Sleeper.

Best Ball

Season-long drafting where the highest-scoring lineup combination is used each week automatically. No weekly lineup management. Underdog is the leader in Best Ball.

Pick\'em (Player Projections)

Select whether 2-6 player projections will go OVER or UNDER posted lines. Offered by Underdog, PrizePicks, and Sleeper. The format resembles parlays but is classified as DFS skill-based contests in NC.

Battle Royale / Showdowns

Single-game DFS contests where users draft players from one specific game. Available at DraftKings (Showdown) and FanDuel (Single-Game).

DFS vs. NC Sports Betting

• Age: DFS requires 18+. Sports betting requires 21+.
• Regulation: DFS is regulated under HB 925 (2019). Sports betting is regulated by the NC State Lottery Commission under HB 347 (2023).
• Markets: DFS contests are skill-based with cumulative player statistics determining prizes. Sports betting is fixed-odds wagering on team or player outcomes.
• House edge: DFS operators take a "rake" (typically 8-15%) of contest entries. Sports betting operators take vig (typically 4.5% on standard markets).

NC College DFS Restrictions

Note that NC\'s prohibition on individual college player props applies to traditional sports betting; but does NOT apply to DFS contests. DFS contests can include college player projections legally in NC. Operators may still self-restrict to avoid regulatory complications.

DFS Strategy Tips for NC Players
